General Notes:
Gladys was a woman of high achievement, the first lady to obtain Higher national certificate in Mechanical Engineering. she worked for the Iraq petroleum company as a mechanical designer, which enabled her to travel in the Middle East. In company with many others, her life was almost ruined by the death of her fiance, a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps, although his fatal accident did not take place in the War, as many suppose, but in 1920. She and her mother were pillars of St Mildred's church, Addiscombe, which provided one of several outlets for their interest in needlework. They also travelled extensively in Europe where they made many friends, notably in France and Italy. Gladys took very seriously her duties as Godmother to Andrew Hudson, spending a week every summer in the 1950s to showing him London. Later she required him to act as her escort to social events including the Iraq Petroleum Company Annual Dinner. He suspects that he was to a small extent a 'Donald substitute', as became clear when she addressed him thus when heavily sedated during her terminal illness. She was a wonderful person and never afraid to state her opinion in a voice which carried well and which could be heard quite adequately across a crowded cinema. An example which sticks in the mind is a family expedition to the film 'Cleopatra' at the Dominion, Tottenham Court Road, during which she provided a running commentary on the veracity of the Egyptian film locations!
Gladys married Donald Hastings Sadler about 1920 in Engagement Only : Marraige Prevented By Death Of Fiance. (Donald Hastings Sadler died on 24 Jun 1920.)
